Temporary FilesAugust 2002 Did you know that many files are being created on your hard drive every time you use your computer? Ever wonder where these files come from? Most of them come from program installations - while the program is installing on your system, it uses the \Windows\Temp folder much like a scratch pad, where it can create files that it needs to use during the installation. Once the install is completed, these files should be deleted automatically. Unfortunately, many install programs do not clean up after themselves, leaving you with a cluttered hard drive. Sometimes temp files are created when your computer has a "hiccup". If a program locks up while you are using it, if you get the 'dreaded blue screen of death' or an illegal operation message, a temp file is likely to be created in the \Windows\Temp folder. In some programs, these temp files can even cause the error to recur even after you have rebooted the system. It's a good idea to check for temp files from time to time and delete them. Generally once a month is sufficient for most users. Most of these files will be located in the \Windows\Temp folder. You can also do a search on all drives for *.tmp and ~*.* - delete any of these files you find. If a file is currently in use, then Windows will tell you it cannot be deleted - just wait until the next time to delete that particular file. You may be surprised by how much space is being used by these mysterious little files! Things have been picking up on a steady basis - meaning I'm busier than ever! Because of this, I've decided to change the hours that I will be available. Since most of you need me to be available in the evening hours, I will now be available from 1 p.m. - 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Prior to 1 p.m. I will not be taking phone calls, nor making appointments. Sundays, of course, I am not available, except for the direst of emergencies - and be prepared to pay twice the price!
