When I was a kid about twenty
I thought
that I knew everything
Til I met a guy on the corner
Who sold me a beautiful ring
He whispered young man,
it's a bargain
This gold is the finest you'll see
And
I thought it must be from Ireland
When it turned my finger
green!
My old man said I was a dumb-bell
I left
the house in a huff
He said if you never come back here
I'm sure that will be soon enough
I stayed for a week
with the neighbor
I thought he would quickly repent
But then when I wrote him a letter
This is the message he
sent -
Now this comes from all of the folks
If
you think we're dying to see you
Just make up some more
funny jokes!
I heard there was gold in Alaska
So
I made a dash, right away
Now there may be gold in those
gosh durn hills
But so far as I care it can stay there
I bought me a pick and a shovel
I dug night and day
without rest
But all that I got for my troubles
Was
a darn good cold in the chest
I thought I was smart
as a fox
But I dug a hole clear to china
And never found
nothing but rocks
I thought I'd be safe in the army
And not have to work anymore
I hadn't hardly got settled
When somebody started a war
They took us right up to
the trenches
The captain wished all of us luck
Then
he beat it right back to Paris
I hope he got hit with a
truck
They said what a hero I'd be
But I said you
guys take your medals
I'll take my liberty
I don't
give a darn what they say
This old world is chuck full of
liars
And a new one is born every day
Oh! Don't you
believe it!
